Clinical Counsellor, Play Therapist

For us to heal from the experiences and struggles we face, we must allow ourselves to process our thoughts and emotions. I work with clients in a gentle and non-judgemental manner. I offer short term and long term goals focused on counselling for children, youth and adults.

I support children, youth and adults who feel stuck, anxious, and unable to enjoy their present lives. Our past struggles and experiences can sometimes leave a negative residue on us and prevent us from living freely. For us to heal from the experiences and struggles we face we must allow ourselves to process our thoughts and emotions so we can truly move past them.

I work with clients in a gentle and non judgmental manner to support you in navigating through your struggles and help you cope effectively. I offer short term and long-term goal focused counselling for children, youth, and adults. I have experience helping clients to cope with depression and anxiety, build self-esteem and self-acceptance.

I have spent many years as a behavioral therapist working with children and youth on the autism spectrum. I offer counselling for children with autism as well as support for parents. No matter what your struggle or difficulty is, I will work with you to support you in learning and developing the skills you need to help cope with the challenges you face.

This is your journey. Only you have lived your life and become the person you are today. You know what you need, or maybe you just know you want something different, and I’m here to walk that path with you.

I offer non-judgmental, collaborative, client-centered, strengths-based support to help you process whatever it is you are working through. One of the things I enjoy most about this work is being able to help adults and youth become empowered again– remind them that they are stronger than they think, that many of the resources or answers are already there, waiting to be uncovered.

Some of the hardships I have assisted people with are:

    • Past traumas that they feel “stuck” with.
    • Recent traumas and feeling overwhelmed.
    • Working through panic attacks and other anxiety disorders
    • Improving communication in relationships
    • Working out boundaries and creating plans for difficult conversations

I have had the good fortune to be supporting people since 2007, when I began working in Mental Health and Addictions. I always knew that I wanted to be a trauma counsellor (growing up with a first responder for a father was bound to do that to one of us 4 kids), so I knew I needed to continue with my education and experience. In 2010 I obtained my Bachelor of Social Work degree and began working as a Probation Officer. While I enjoyed working with people and facilitating groups, probation was not where I ultimately wanted to be so I pursued my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree from Yorkville University. After completing that practicum in 2013 and facilitating trauma groups, I began work as a trauma counsellor in a local non-profit, assisting women who had experienced childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault and/or domestic violence. More recently I have been working as a generalist counsellor, supporting people with a wide variety of issues/concerns.

My areas of specialization are:

    • Addictions
    • Anger Management
    • Anxiety
    • Communication/Boundaries
    • Critical Incident Stress
    • Depression
    • Domestic Violence
    • Self-Esteem
    • Stress Management
    • Trauma

I use the following modalities when working with clients:

    • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy
    • Dialectic Behavioural Therapy
    • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
    • Mindfulness
    • Motivational Interviewing
    • Narrative Therapy
    • Psychoeducation

Clinical Counsellor, Play Therapist

It isn’t easy to seek support, but here you are. You’ve already jumped over a very tough hurdle! I bring warmth and compassion to each interaction and believe in the innate ability we all have to heal and grow. It’s my goal to help you find a deeper appreciation and understanding of self and to expand your capacity for lifelong resiliency in a space where you feel seen and heard.

Life is tough sometimes. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck or unable to cope, I can help you. I am passionate about helping children and youth become empowered and in charge of their thoughts. If your child is having a hard time with thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, I am here to support as well. You are not alone.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) through BCACC. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Masters of Counselling from City University and currently, I am working towards becoming a Certified Play Therapist. Prior to counselling, I worked as a Kindergarten Teacher for nearly 10 years. It was this role as an early childhood educator that ignited my desire to help children through the challenges of life with more depth and meaning. It fuelled my curiosity around attachment theory and how adverse childhood experiences affect the developing brain, impacting children’s emotional and developmental trajectory. Which ultimately filters into our lives as adults.

I am passionate about helping young children, youth, and adults process their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that grants them the awareness that they are truly capable and worthy. Through a person-centered, holistic and collaborative approach, my practice aims to help shift unhelpful thinking and exercise healthy coping. I’ll help you identify the physiological responses, process the root cause and learn effective self-regulation to make daily life feel lighter and more enjoyable.  I am equally as enthusiastic to work with caregivers and families to support in better understanding the why behind behaviours, strategies for dealing with diverse needs, and personal struggles.

My approach is integrative and based on your unique needs; I may utilize CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, Somatic Practices, Play Therapy and Psychoeducation. I work within a range of areas such as:

  • Emotional Regulation
  • Coping Skills
  • Boundaries
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Early childhood development
  • Parenting
  • Pregnancy, prenatal, postpartum
  • Trauma
  • Divorce/Separation
  • Life Transitions
  • Family dynamics
  • Self-esteem
  • Grief and loss

Everyone deserves a safe, trusting space to share and unpack their story. It would be an honour to walk alongside you as you rise through this and find inner peace.

Although reaching out to a counsellor can make a person feel vulnerable it is through that vulnerability that assists us in building self-esteem, confidence and resilience to move forward in our lives. In my practice, I emphasize creating a trusting professional relationship using compassion, empathy and understanding your circumstance more clearly. With added support and education, we can alleviate the current intensity of the struggle or difficult situation. I am a Registered Clinical counsellor,  Registered Social Worker and a Certified Clinical Supervisor assisting other clinicians in their practice. I have been in private practice for over 25 years. We often feel alone and lost in these personal experiences, often relying on uncomfortable means of coping. If you are here, it means you’re beginning the difficult step to reach out and foster your mental wellness.

I use an integrative trauma informed approach to therapy which includes Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Somatic Therapy and Person Centered, to best suit your needs. I see humans as holistic beings through a biopsychosocial lens, acknowledging the interplay of the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of our contexts. I have had the privilege of working with an array of clients and their challenges, including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, stress, eating disorders, ADHD, processing grief, and life transitions. At the heart of my approach is the therapeutic relationship, which is built on unconditional positive regard, non-judgment, empathy and safety.

I have a background in Psychology and World Literature from Simon Fraser University, and currently at the end of my Master of Arts in Clinical Counselling Psychology thesis program at Adler University. Prior to graduate training, I worked as researcher within the field which influenced my keen interest in understanding the human experience, along with supporting and advocating for individuals in crisis and at risk. I take it to be the greatest honor to be a witness to and have the opportunity to hold people’s stories in a therapeutic setting.  Most importantly I would like to acknowledge the important first step you are taking in seeking therapy.

Intern Counsellor, Play Therapist

I am here to walk alongside you on the path you are currently navigating. Life presents us with unique challenges and hardships, and seeking help can help us attain a clearer path. Acknowledging the need for assistance is not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to your strength and courage. I am deeply committed to supporting you as we explore different avenues for change. My role is to provide a safe, empathetic, and nonjudgmental space to facilitate your journey toward personal growth.

I am currently a Master of Counselling Psychology student at Yorkville University. Prior to starting the master’s program, I completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of the Fraser Valley with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. The knowledge I gained throughout my undergrad allows me to better understand how our minds impact us in how we think and feel, as well as how we are impacted by our environment and society.

Before becoming a counsellor, I worked for a non-profit at an emergency shelter where I worked closely with individuals struggling with active addiction, diverse mental health issues, women and men fleeing domestic violence situations and a general population of people who are struggling to keep up with the fast pace of life.

My therapeutic approach is rooted in the belief that you already possess the necessary resources within you to foster meaningful change. My role is to guide you in nurturing these existing skills and developing new tools to achieve your goals. I am here to support you, creating a safe space where you can freely express deep thoughts and emotions, even those that may be difficult or uncomfortable to articulate.

Areas I am able to support you include, but are not limited to:

  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ2+
  • Depression
  • Women’s issues
  • Boundaries
  • Burnout
  • Stress Management
  • Communication building
  • Confidence Building
  • Interpersonal Conflict
  • Self-Esteem
  • Life Transitions
  • Guilt and Shame
  • Coping Skills
  • Self-Esteem and Sense of Self

Intern Counsellor

I have learned over a number of careers that one of my true joys is supporting people to accomplish their goals. I bring considerable life experience, empathy, and understanding to my practice allowing me to provide a safe, non-threatening, and non-judgmental environment.

I believe in working with you to achieve your goals.

I have had a number of careers in my life: selling automotive, agricultural, and truck parts, as a counselor with John Howard Society, and many years working at universities in Canada, Qatar, and UAE. My family and I spent nearly 8 years overseas returning to Canada in 2017, with a ton of experience and a lot of reverse culture shock. Throughout these careers I have developed and nurtured a strong sense of service, bringing me to my third and current career as a clinical counsellor (intern), returning to a path I began many years ago.

My approach to counselling is person-centered (client-centered) and contextual. I believe in an integrative therapeutic model that includes:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy
  • Gottman Method
  • Integrative Therapy
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Solution-Focused Therapy

I serve a number of areas of concern including, but not limited to,

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Life Transitions (including retirement)
  • Men’s Issues
  • Relationship Counselling
  • Interpersonal Conflict
  • Burnout

Art Therapist, Play Therapist

Art Therapy as well as the other expressive therapies are unique in that they bridge cultural and language divides. I am passionate about helping my clients find their voice through artistic expression and transforming their pain and trauma into something capable of supporting growth and a meaningful future.

I have a background in outreach and community support and have worked with individuals and families in crisis. I truly believe in our ability to overcome trauma and tragedy through connection and creativity and I will meet you where you are.

I am an Art Therapist and a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor with training in individual and group counselling and work with children, teens and adults. I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology with the University of British Columbia and my postgraduate diploma with the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute. My theoretical lens is Humanistic and Person Centered and I take a Strengths-based approach to therapy.

As a parent with a child in the local school district I also have an intimate awareness of the limitations and challenges of navigating the system while advocating for their needs and dealing with the constant turnover in staff. I support kids and their families in pursuing assessment, meeting their education goals and managing difficult behaviours. In addition to neurodiversity and learning disabilities, I also support kids and their families through separation and divorce and provide a stable and consistent environment through this difficult transition.
