Counselling for ICBC Customers in Langley – Everything You Should Know

We offer counselling for ICBC customers in Langley, BC.

When most people think of automobile accidents, they imagine physical ailments like whiplash and concussions. Mental health issues are just as crucial. Whether it’s a brief spell of worry or something more serious, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), you must ensure that your mental health is given attention. Fortunately, your ICBC coverage includes counselling and psychological treatment. Let’s look at counselling for ICBC customers and what you should know before consulting a therapist.

How No-Fault Benefits Work & How You Can Get Counselling At No Cost

Counselling is one of the treatment options available through ICBC’s Enhanced Accident benefits, no matter who is responsible (at fault) in the crash.

“Part 7 Benefits,” are outlined in the Insurance (Vehicle) Act Regulations. These benefits cover anyone who was in an accident in British Columbia or any BC resident that was involved in an accident anywhere else in North America. The coverage for Part 7 benefits may come from ICBC or another insurer from outside of the region.

If you get into an accident with a driver from another province, don’t worry–you will still be covered by your insurance. This is because all out-of-province insurers are required by law to provide the same level of no-fault benefits as what is available in BC.

ssWhat’s Covered Under the New ICBC Rules

The new ICBC rules took effect on April 1, 2019. These regulations have expanded your accident coverage. Acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, kinesiology, massage therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, doctor visits, and counselling are some of the services now covered. In cases where you are unable to work for a certain length of time due to the accident, day-to-day assistance such as homemaking services is also offered. Wages lost coverage is available in instances where you are unable to work for a specific length of time.

Before April 1, 2019, you needed a healthcare practitioner’s referral to receive these medical treatments through ICBC. You no longer need one under the new standards. You may get treatment at your leisure within the first 12 weeks, and the doctor can bill ICBC directly after that. The number of authorized therapy varies for different therapies, but you are entitled to up to 12 sessions over the course of 12 weeks for clinical counselling. If the counsellor you select doesn’t directly bill ICBC, then you must submit your receipts to ICBC for reimbursement within 60 days of treatment.

At Crossroads Collective, we do not offer direct billing for ICBC customers.

If your counsellor charges more than $120 per session, you will be responsible for the additional cost. If you have extended health insurance through your job or privately, it might cover the difference. Fortunately, it covers up to 12 visits at $120 each.

ICBC Counselling

What If You Need Counselling for More than 12 Weeks?

The 12-week limit is designed to shorten the process when you don’t need extended care. This also saves you time because you can set up the services without needing to speak with a doctor or ICBC claim adjuster first. ICBC does not have to pay the medical expenses for these recommendations because it does not have to pay the doctors’ fees for them. ICBC nevertheless requires you to go through these channels if you want long-term care for more than 12 weeks.

If it’s determined that you’ll need more than 12 weeks of counselling, you’ll need to seek a referral and make certain your claims adjuster is aware of the situation. An RCA is a medical professional who offers independent consultations to accident victims when their recoveries aren’t progressing as planned.

RCA may suggest other treatment choices that can assist your doctor or another health care provider in developing your treatment strategy.

Signs That You Might Benefit from Counselling for ICBC Customers

If you’re struggling with any of these issues, counselling could be a possible solution. It can help you take back control of your life and feel normal again.

This is especially critical if you need to drive often, whether to and from work, to transport your children to their activities, or run simple errands. When you have to get behind the wheel, anxiety about driving can make it extremely stressful.

Some common symptoms people experience after being in a car accident are:

  • Fear of driving again

  • Panic attacks

  • Sleeping difficulties

  • Flashbacks and nightmares

  • Low energy throughout the day

  • Muscular strain and headaches

  • Irritability

Book Your ICBC Subsidized Counselling as Soon as Possible

You are eligible for 12 counselling sessions from the date of the motor vehicle accident under ICBC’s new rules.

Book your first session for counselling as soon as possible following the accident. This will allow your counsellor more time to analyze your condition and take action if they believe you’ll require more than 12 weeks of therapy.
