What is Neurofeedback?
NeurOptimal® is essentially a brain workout. It trains your brain to be more flexible and resilient. Without pushing it in any specific direction, the NeurOptimal® neurofeedback system interacts with your central nervous system in a way that improves neural plasticity. A mind that is more flexible adapts and responds quicker and more appropriately to changes in your environment.
NeurOptimal® can also help build brain resilience, or an increase in the central nervous system’s ability to “bounce back” from a negative event. Negative feelings associated with a personal conflict or bad day at work can hover hours after the actual event has passed. The destructive effects of nervousness or self-critical thinking is magnified in more severe events. Instead of staying stuck in the negativity of these events, the resilient brain snaps back and returns to its normal baseline quicker. Individuals with more resilient brains report feeling happier and enjoying a more profound sense of peace.
NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback is a powerful evidence-based approach to enhancing mental health and well-being. It is a 100% non-invasive, drug-free, brain training system that helps the central nervous system (CNS) make the best use of the brain’s natural resources. NeurOptimal™ Neurofeedback brain training can help to:
- increase relaxation and confidence
- improve concentration and focus
- decrease anxiety and depression symptoms
- improve sleep quality
How does Neurofeedback work?
Much like a mirror that promotes self-correction, the NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback program monitors your brain waves and then provides “feedback” to your central nervous system about what it has just done. When the software detects a tremor in our brain wave pattern, it sends an audible signal that encourages the brain to “reset” and self-correct.
Neurofeedback training is based on the scientific finding that we can all learn to change our brain’s functioning through feedback about brain wave activity. The brain is capable of reorganizing itself to the point of producing new neural circuitry in response to specific training – this is currently referred to as “neuroplasticity”. Improving brain function helps to significantly reduce or eliminate the underlying causes of many conditions that cause discomfort.
The system that I use, NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, trains your entire central nervous system to perform optimally. It gives your system feedback about its maladaptive patterns and your brain decides how to use that information to improve its overall functioning. Nothing is added to your brain.
I work with a wide variety of clients to help with areas such as anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, concussion, stress management, scholastic and academic effectiveness, ADHD, and aging as well as performance enhancement (including creative, athletic, executive performance).
Who Benefits from Neurofeedback Training?
Anyone can benefit from neurofeedback regardless of the age category that they belong to. Children often see results much quicker because their brains are more malleable.
How Is NeurOptimal® Different from Other Neurofeedback Systems?
NeurOptimal® does not tell the brain what or what not to do. Instead, the system responds to the brainwave information and the client responds to the feedback that the system provides. Furthermore, NeurOptimal® trainers do not diagnose nor treat specific symptoms. Instead, they train the whole brain simultaneously. In addition, traditional neurofeedback systems require licensed clinicians to make or use a diagnosis with the help of electroencephalogram. This makes the process much more time consuming, expensive and is unnecessary.
Clients generally see an improvement in the following areas:
- Wellness and Personal Development:Wellness is the act of practicing healthy habits on a day-to-day basis in order to maintain good mental and physical health. Clients on this journey tell us that brain training with Neuroptimal gives them a kickstart on their path to wellness and allows them to understand which areas need focus.
- Improved Academic Performance:NeurOptimal® is an incredible tool for learning because it helps with focus, engagement and attention span. Many of my clients report feeling more organized and an improvement in time management.
- Increased Emotional and Physical Wellbeing: NeurOptimal®helps us to become more focused, calmer and better equipped with the tools to excel in daily life.
- Development of an Artistic or Competitive Edge: Users of NeurOptimal typically are more creative and athletically-inclined after a specified number of sessions.
- Slowing the Impacts of Brain Aging: Brain fitness is extremely important at any age, but it is especially critical after age forty when anatomical changes can adversely affect our brains. Neuroptimal users worldwide have found neurofeedback to be an excellent device to prevent the effects of brain aging along with good nutrition, adequate exercise, social activity and more.
During a NeurOptimal® brain training session, you wear two tiny sensors on your head and ear clips on your ears that record the electrical activity of your brain. You sit in a comfortable chair and listen to music while watching a never-repeating fractal image. Through tiny pauses in the music, NeurOptimal® is communicating with the brain, letting it know what it has just done. These interruptions give the opportunity to the brain to self-correct into a more natural, relaxed and effective pattern.

Cassandra Hildebrand, M.A.
Clinical Counsellor (RCC, CCC) & Certified Play Therapist
Cassandra is a clinical counsellor with additional training in NeurOptimal neurofeedback. Neurofeedback is a method effectively used to train the brain utilizing computer and EEG technology to help individuals perform optimally and reduce undesirable symptoms. Neurofeedback can help the brain to become more flexible and resilient to various types of stress as it trains your brain to regulate itself better. Simply put, when your brain is regulating itself better, you feel better, speeding up your recovery process.
Cassandra holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Counselling from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and has completed her Counselling Psychology Masters Degree from Trinity Western University. She is certified as a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC).
