CVAP – Crime Victim Assistance Program

There are many ways a crime can affect your life. If you have been physically or emotionally hurt as a result of a violent crime, you may be entitled to financial assistance. We offer direct billing so you don’t have to stress about paying out of pocket for your sessions.

The Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) assists victims, immediate family members and some witnesses in coping with the effects of violent crime. It provides financial benefits to help offset financial losses and assist in recovery.

Applying for Benefits

Application forms are also available from victim service programs or through the Crime Victim Assistance Program.

In most cases, the application must be received within one year from the date the crime took place. You do not have to wait for charges to be laid or for the offender to be conviction before applying for benefits.

Extensions to the one-year time limit are made in the following situations:

  • The applicant is under 19. In this case, the victim has until they turn 20 to apply. Minors can apply on their own or a parent or guardian can apply on their behalf
  • The crime is a sexual offence that occurred after July 1, 1972. In this case, the victim (including minors) can apply at any time. The victim’s immediate family members must apply within one year of the date the crime took place or when the crime became known to them
  • The program provides an extension because the applicant could not, for a variety of reasons, reasonably have been expected to complete an application within one year

Benefits for Victims of Crime include:

  • Medical and dental services
  • Prescription drug expenses
  • Counselling
  • Protective measures
  • Replacement of damaged or destroyed eyeglasses, clothing and disability aids
  • Childcare and homemaker services
  • Disability aids and related disability expenses or services
  • Support for a child born because of a crime
  • Vocational services
  • Income support or lost earning capacity
  • Transportation and related expenses
  • Crime scene cleaning

I am writing this letter to express my absolute appreciation for the entire staff at Crossroads Collective. I am a CVAP client who underwent tremendous trauma and without their help I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I have had multiple different types of therapy through their office, each one an experience I will never forget. When going through trauma you feel like there is no way out to feel anything different again, yet they took their time to work with my needs and also at the same time working with my progress. The collaborative teamwork amongst the staff, to truly see what I may be ready for (sometimes even what I may not be ready for) was instrumental in getting me to the emotional repair that I need. I would like everyone to be aware of the kindness and care that Crossroads takes to assist in getting the help that they may need.

With all of the different services that they offer, and how willing they are to work with you on your appointment availability, it is a safe place to find peace to the noise that may be happening in your life/mind. Thank you, Crossroads Collective, for all of your generous caring support. I finally am on the road to recovery.

I have been Lisa’s client for years now and I have had the privilege of getting to know her and her amazing team. She truly cares about her clients especially their mental and emotional health. Lisa has helped me countless times with my anxiety and trauma. She is a very calm, friendly and caring woman, who will go above and beyond to make sure you feel good about yourself before you leave your session. My kids also see their wonderful support staff and they love their session times with them and always feel comfortable to be there, feeling supported and welcomed. They love the one on one time and also get to learn new things. Lisa has a great team working with her and they have done nothing but grow to be better to help more clients. I truly appreciate the time and all the help I have received from Crossroads for my kids and I. They have helped my family with so much and I look forward to watching them grow even more.
